Saturn V Reviews
The Saturn V featuring Orbit "LCB" 7" EP (Teen Sound) Surfy San Francisco combo weigh in with four tunes for teenaged twisters. Fake Merseybeat collectors will want to tune in for their version of mocktop classic "Mersey Mercy" (aka "You've Got Me Bugged').

SATURN V (featuring ORBIT)
"Behind Closed Doors" EP

Whoa. Someone working a curve for me here. Certainly not my usual review fodder. I'll take a crack at that though. This was recorded when the SATURN V were in England, and had the opportunity to record with Liam Watson.

The result was the toe-tapping, catchy '60s roots rock platter I'm holding. The enthusiasm felt in the studio is well cataloged - the songs are melodic, punchy and upbeat. Can't even begin to tell when this was recorded - authentic would have to apply. Have Gun, indeed.

"A BRIEF LOOK-BACK AT THE LAS VEGAS GRIND '99"
The Saturn V Featuring Orbit - What a killer band, with amazing stage-presence. They were able to follow the incredible Trashmen, and that's saying a lot. The twist contest was a real hit with the very drunk crowd. The only band of weekend who I actually got around to buying records from (their Behind Closed Doors EP is great).

It's what you've all been waiting for! The new EP by The Saturn V Featuring Orbit is here - full of great 60's style frat rock n' roll.

Recorded in London by Liam Watson, this four cut slab has some of the best music you'll ever hear - including Johnny "Big Hand" Bartlett's ode to the Beatles!

"Buckleshoe Stomp"
b/w "Speedway Twist"

(7" Hypothermic Records, Holland)
A frat stomp romp of the first order, "Buckleshoe Stomp" blends drunken frat chorus with '60s hot rod & surf. This tune makes you wanna drink heavy, stomp hard, and shout it out loud. It's hard to simply sit still and not crack a smile listening to this one.

"Speedway Twist" is an instro that slaps its way through all four gears and leaves a two-minute slab of rubber on your turntable. This 7" is a must have for the uninhibited and those who wish to be.

Saturn V & Orbit (it is the singer!) play of the frat a little like Untamed Youth, looking after the sound, the playing and the voices. ...Day Two

The doors were scheduled to open at 3:00 so we didn't show up until 7:00. And of course they actually opened at 3:00, which means we missed some stuff. We made shure we were dead drunk by 8:30, which means we didn't notice a lot of other stuff.

We did catch Saturn V featuring Orbit, who were toe- tappingly- tastic. Johnny Bartlett played guitar. Good ol' time frat rock and twist type tunes. Highly entertaining...

Re: TIGER MASK Compilation

The liner notes mention that The Saturn V Featuring Orbit's contribution, "Long Time Ago" has a Coasters feel to it. Can't argue with that one, since there's a definite storyline with bass vocal spoken interjections-kinda like on "Yakety-Yak." (Huh!?!? -ed.) This bunch gives forth with a truly enjoyable take on the late 50s/early 60s rock'n'roll good times sound. I can't help but be glad these guys exist. We need more bands like this in our lives.

1 Tom Guido squeaks his stream- of- consciousness musings into the mike--starts off by saying something about prunes, and ends with "bring back the '60s!"

2 Johnny Bartlett is my favorite guitarist; his stance (one foot in front of the other) and head bobble alone are worth the price of admission.

3 Surly bartendress in an Agent 99 dress jumps on the bar to bump and grind while the line for beers is 20 deep; from afar I see her kick someone angrily in the head -- turns out it's CVS!

Title: Having A Twist Party

***Still twisting in the wake of nearly a dozen singles releases, San Francisco's endearing 1960s-styled frat-rock princes finally frug-up a long player. Fourteen tracks of previously unreleased stompers, rockers, twisters, and shakers performed with gusto by JOHNNY BARTLETT (ex-PHANTOM SURFERS), DR. PAT PHELAN (ex-BRENTWOODS), RON SILVA (ex-CRAWDADDIES), and vocalist/emcee ORBIT

Tigermask - Trash Au Go Go (Dionysus LP & CD compilation ID123358) “Long Time Ago” This frat supergroup combining ex-members of the Phantom Surfers, Crawdaddys, Gravedigger 5, etc., delights us with a Coasters-like number with an ultra-authentic '60s sound rivaling Fortune & Maltese. My personal favorites part of their live show is CVS's Wilson Pickett style warm-up rant introducing Orbit.

Ensuite et pour clor la soirée ce fut a tour des Saturn V Featuring Orbit. Tout comme la Breadmakers la vielle, ces personnages savent reveiller les morts.

Buckleshoe Stomp / Speedway Twist

(Hypodermic Rec. MS45 008)

Cover robbed from the Dovells' "You Can't Sit Down," this is a great single by a great band. The A side is a cover of a 1964 hit for the Snobs, a group with a mod look. Have no fears, Orbit CVS and friends won't follow them down that path. Otherwise, how could they do the twist on a speedway?

V/A Swingin' Creepers - A Tribute To The Ventures MuSick Recordings MuSick 0010 CD
Some of the hottest instrumental bands of right this very second pay homage to the grooviest surf band of all time who, by the by, are still hard at it as well.

23 guitar generated gems as interpreted lovingly and faithfully by the Space Cossacks, Fathoms, Eddie Angel & the Omega Men, Quiets, Volcanoes, Exotics, Cave 4, Boss Martians, Jon & the Niteriders, Sir Finks, Bomboras, Fortune & Maltese & the Phabulous Pallbearers, Davie Allen & the Arrows, Saturn V, Tiki Tones, Looney Tunes, Mystery Action, Vice Royals, Satan's Pilgrims, Huntington Cads and Ivan Pogracic featuring Ed Abolins and Eric Ebeling.

The songs are cool, the performances are dead on and this makes for an excellent collection of original Ventures compositions, well known and obscure. Comes with liner notes about the Ventures, these tunes, and the groups that laid them down.

Perfect companion for the Shadows tribute on this swingin' label that is home to some of the best instru riffage of today-au-go-go.

Give Her Lovin' b/w (Do The) Syracuse 7"
The Saturn V are undoubtedly one of the best bands to hit the scene in many years - and with Johnny Bartlet and Ron Silva among their ranks what else does one expect? It's refreshing, honest, fun frat-rock. Give Her Lovin' (The Kingsmen) from the beach-movie, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini and (Do The) Syracuse (early Young Rascals) are both executed finely, with a real feeling for the music.

After too many years of surf-instro bands, this is very refreshing to hear. What the Kaisers are doing for Merseybeat, The Saturn V are doing for frat. An exceptional release sleeve in a suitably authentic looking cover.

Records can't sound much better than this. The production leaves no hole uncovered and the talent speaks for itself. It's none other than Johnny Bartlett on guitar, and I haven't heard a guitar played like that in ages.

The other four members contributing to this record are also impressive, from the organ to the lead vocals from Orbit. Very refined rock 'n' roll, this combo has seen many a practice.

First, go see the Saturn V live. Then, go see them again. O.k., now throw this slab of meat on your shitty stereo and relive all the fun you had at the shows, wishing your parents had taught you how to twist properly.

The Saturn V are more fun than an Animal House frat party, and the singer, Orbit looks like a lounge singer at a shriners convention! Johnny Bartlett (of Phantom Surfers fame), along with Crawdaddies and Gravedigger V members look like they're having so much fun, that they should be paying US to watch them! There should be more "Fun" bands like The Saturn V.

Who are The Saturn V?
Orbit, the lead singer, is truly a one-of-a-kind music maniac. I met him many years back when he literally leaped on the stage when my band (the late infamous Poptarts) were playing, did an impromptu dance, some back up vocals, and then launched himself into the first example of true audience surfing I had ever witnessed! A showman extraordinaire! - Gael McGear
FORTUNE & MALTESE and the PHABULOUS PALLBEARERS Rule!!! They rocked the Purple Onion Sunday night (July 26, 1999). Even though it was their third gig in as many days, and they had to drive 400 miles from LA and almost immediately take the stage, they played with enough energy to light a medium-sized city. The crowd went wild! Michael Maltese has switched from organ to bass, and a new guy is on keyboards. They are more punk than the last time we saw them, screaming perfect 3 part harmonies, and making you really love and miss the mid 60s. F&M are collectively the dreamiest band to grace the stage of the Onion (the Saturn V notwithstanding, of course!) All the girls in the audience were swooning, and all the guys wished they were in a band.

Also, Freddy and Mike were the most honest judges who have ever judged the twist contest and could not be bribed! For the first time ever, a guy actually had a real chance of winning! (Sorry Dean!) Even when a girl ripped off her top in an effort to sway the judging, Mike actually disqualified her, because she was not an official semi-finalist! We need more guys like them in Washington!

Well, the gauntlet had been thrown down. The Saturn V really had to go to work after the fantastic set by F&M. Especially since Orbit had said that the losers of the Battle of the Bands would have to leave show business forever!!! CVS was playing another gig with his other band across town and they had to stall until he got to the Onion.

Finally he arrived and the Saturn V took the stage. But the 'Vees came thru and really rocked it up. They went wild! The audience members got over their shyness - or maybe they just really wanted to win the transistor radio! - but they filled the dance floor and twisted the night away. Johnny's dream of World Twist Domination was coming true. (He almost ruined things by trying to get everyone to do "The Freddy" during Fortune & Maltese's set, but then regained his focus, and returned to his twisting!)

The night ended with Ron playing his drums standing up, Tom and Johnny each playing their guitars behind their heads but facing each other singing into the same microphone, so the guitars were going in opposite directions, Orbit completely drenched in beer and CVS standing on top of his Vox Jaguar, leaning over Orbit and singing into the same microphone, and if anyone got a picture of that, please send it to The Saturn V Featuring Orbit Photo Contest and you will WIN!!!

In conclusion, no one has to leave show business, as it was a complete draw, but there will be a rematch in London on Halloween, at The Wild Weekend!
